Join us on the May long-weekend

Petrofka Bridge to Prince Albert. We want to get our tripping started
early this year but were not into freezing to death. If its
too cold (or theres a gale blowing), be forewarned that we
will cancel or postpone. This is a new trip for us and we welcome
input. Please e-mail us if youd like to join us or if you
have information to share with us. Well also need someone

May 24th: Great Wilderness Cleanup/Meewasin Valley
Authority River Cleanup
1:00 PM - Meet at the Victoria Park Boathouse
OK, it's not a trip, per se, but you will get to
paddle some! Come join us for the SCC contribution to the Great
Wilderness Clean-Up on Sunday May 24th at 1 PM We will meet at the
boathouse and paddle upriver to clean up some of the river islands
(and shoreline if time allows). Bring snacks, gloves, and be prepared
in case of weather changes. The Great Wilderness Cleanup efforts
are now an international event, reaching as far as the UK &
Brazil. Clean-ups are being completed on canoe routes, portages,
campsites, campgrounds, access points, backpacking and hiking trails,
etc... just about anywhere that people go to enjoy the wilderness.
The SCC is participating combined with the efforts of the Meewasin
Valley Authority (their Clean-up Event runs from April 9 to April
26, 2009). Note also that this event is not limited to our afternoon
paddle on the river: you can register your own cleanup as an individual
or group of a favourite piece of wilderness at http://www.wildernesscleanup.com/.
For more information on the SCC event, call Bryan at 242-1200 or
e-mail info@saskatooncanoeclub.org.
Together we can make a difference to keep our waterways clean.
June 6th: Outlook to Saskatoon
Ken Achtymichuk wants members to consider a one day "century
distance" (94 km) canoe trip from Outlook to Saskatoon on Saturday,
June 6 (June 13 as alternate). Ken lives in Outlook & would
be prepared to facilitate some of the support duties for such an
adventure. He is familiar with the river in the Outlook area, &
hopes that some others who have traveled the route would be able
to join this trip. Contact Ken at tuber.tech@sasktel.net,
or 306-867-5552.
June 6th-7th: Torch River - Canceled due to
a lack of water!
The Torch
River north of Love is a great little river for novice paddlers
to get a bit of whitewater experience before heading off on a northern
fly-in canoe trip. The river is full of easy class 1 rapids,
which require some rock dodging and waves to negotiate. This
trip will be an overnighter, on the Saturday we will drive to the
river and spend the day paddling from the Love bridge to the White
Fox bridge. We will spend the night at the put-in. On Sunday we
have a choice, we can either paddle the upper portion of the Torch
River again or if the water levels permit we could paddle the White
Fox River. This trip is completely based on water levels so if there
is not enough water or too much water, we may not go on
the scheduled weekend. To sign up for the trip call Mark @ 955-4587.
June 14th-27th: William River and Athabasca Sand Dunes
An opening for two on this Saskatchewan adventure has become available.
Trippers include Fred Gaskin & Candy Wilson, Keith & Pat
Hamilton, Walt & Wharren Blahey, Scotland's Chris & Sally
Dickinson, & Su & Jason Schoonover. If you're interested,
contact Jason as soon as possible at jason.schoonover@shaw.ca.
Come out and canoe with some of the worlds best canoeists.
June 21st: Sunday Paddle
Join a flotilla of paddlers for an afternoon of canoeing and kayaking
on the South Saskatchewan River. We will spend the afternoon on
the river, padding from the Fred Heal canoe launch back to the boathouse.
The trip will take about 4-5 hours. Be sure to bring sun block,
enough water and a light snack because we will stop on a sandbar
for a break. Also ensure that you are dressed for the weather and
are prepared for changes in the weather. To sign up for this afternoon
paddle you must call Mark @ 955-4587.
Cree River: June 28th - July 5th.
We will be paddling (some say "cruising") the Cree
River, putting in on Cree Lake and finishing at Wapata Lake.
The Cree River is about 200 km long and flows through "the
epitome of Athabasca Plain landscape," with many shallow rapids.
There are no (mandatory) portages and the wildlife and fishing potentials
are said to be excellent. For more details on the trip, see Laurel
Archer's book, Northern Saskatchewan Canoe Trips. We are
expecting a group of 6-8 people. This is a fly-in and fly-out trip
and is remote so the costs are relatively high (about $1000/person
for the flights). We are looking for one or two additional trippers.
Moderate whitewater experience is a must since there are no egress
points anywhere along the river in case of mishap. For more information,
contact Bryan or Karrie at 242-1200 or pawistik@gmail.com.
Late June/Early July: Outlook to Saskatoon
- Canceled
Drivers will shuttle us to Outlook after
work on a Friday. Paddle for a few hours, & then setup camp
for the night. This ~90 km trip is a leisurely weekend paddle, a
nice intro to canoe tripping for those that are new to the sport
& allows you to get some kilometers racked up & try some
new recipes in the field. Contact us at
treasurer@saskatooncanoeclub.org if you wish to come along.
July 12th: Sunday Paddle
Join a group of paddlers for an afternoon of canoeing and kayaking
on the South Saskatchewan River.
Contact
treasurer@saskatooncanoeclub.org if you wish to come along.
July 23-26: Rapids above Barker Lake on the Churchill River
This is a beginner whitewater weekend trip
for club members that have never experienced moving water beyond
the Saskatchewan Rivers. The only requirement is a desire to learn
something new. The plan is to leave early Thursday morning so camp
can be set up & T-rescues practiced Thursday evening to get
a full weekend of paddling in. I want to emphasize that there is
no experience necessary; everyone will have plenty of that once
the weekend is over. Contact treasurer@saskatooncanoeclub.org
if you wish to learn beginner whitewater skills.
Mid August: Rapids above Barker Lake on the Churchill, Part II
An intermediate whitewater weekend trip
for club members that have prior whitewater experience. The plan
is to go up early Thursday morning, set up camp by late afternoon,
& prepare for the upcoming fun. Destinations include Surf City,
Carla's Rapid, Corner, Farside & what ever else we decide to
play on. Contact treasurer@saskatooncanoeclub.org
if you wish to be part of this more challenging whitewater adventure.
September 6: Sunday Paddle
We will again paddle from the Berry barn back to the Boathouse
only this time we will start early in the afternoon and stop on
an island for supper. We will make a fire to cook over so bring
your favorite camping recipe and show off your camp cooking skills.
This trip takes about 5-6 hours with the island stop over. To sign
up for this afternoon paddle you must call Mark @ 955-4587.
Mid September: Missinipe to Nistowiak Falls
This September trip takes full advantage
of the fall colours and lack of insects. The approximately 70 km
trip will take us past rock paintings, Robertson Falls, Twin Falls,
historic Stanley Mission, & Stanley Rapids. Highlight of the
trip will be the impressive Nistowiak Falls in autumn splendor.
Contact us at treasurer@saskatooncanoeclub.org
if you wish to see the Churchill River.
October 9th-12th: Thanksgiving Canoe Trip
If you are interested in a Thanksgiving with a difference then
you cant miss this one. On this trip we usually paddle to
any number of locations on the Churchill River, usually to a waterfall
or rapid. As usual there will be good company, great weather, saunas,
beautiful vistas and the food is second to none. To sign up call
Mark @ 955-4587.
