Recreation Division Trips 2011
Trips that have been submitted to the executive as club trips will
be posted here. They will be just some of the trips that may take
place during this summer's season. There's always a chance that
more may be scheduled, some may be canceled, or dates could be changed.
The website will be updated throughout the season, so check often for current information
and contacts.
If you want to organize more trips, post the information on the
SCC website bulletin
board, &/or email webmaster@saskatooncanoeclub.org.
As more information about trips becomes available it will be added
to this page if possible.
All trips (unless specified) are organized and led by volunteer
Club members. The leader's role is to work out the logistics and
be a contact person for organization purposes. Participation in
any Club trip requires that you have a current membership. It is
important to understand that the Club is unable to provide "fully
outfitted" trips.
Canoes and kayaks along with the necessary paddling and safety gear
are available from the Club for a nominal fee. Personal gear is
the responsibility of each participant. Any required group equipment
is organized by participant cooperation. The costs (transportation,
food, etc.) associated with each trip are shared.
Transportation is usually provided by car pooling. Food and meal
preparation duties are shared, with lots of help from the more experienced
members. If unsure of your skills or capabilities, consider a day
trip or a short one-camping-night trip before dreaming about a two-week
wilderness adventure.
As some trips are flexible it is best to contact the leader well
in advance of the trip date with your questions or concerns. Additional
information about a particular trip can usually be obtained by phoning
the trip leader. Always plan to attend the pre-trip planning session.
Details regarding the trip will be finalized at these sessions so
come prepared. Trip planning meetings for weekend trips are usually
held at the Boathouse at Victoria Park (Avenue G & 16th Street)
at 7:00 p.m. the Tuesday before the trip. Planning meetings for
longer trips are held at least a week in advance to allow participants
time to get ready for the trip.
All trips are done for fun and enjoyment and allow you to be part
of a group with similar interests. You can find more trip
planning information on this web site.
- N.B.
Check the SCC
Bulletin Board often. There are occasionally groups looking
for an additional paddler or two and that information will be
posted there.

June 5 Fred Heal Canoe Launch to Victoria Park
We will meet at the boathouse at NOON to load boats and gear and head down Highway 219
to the Fred Heal canoe launch. Depending on water levels, we will paddle/float back to
the boathouse in 2-3 hours. This is ideally suited for beginners as a chance to take a
bit of a longer paddle and see more of the river within a safe group.
If interested, please contact Russell
-
June 17-19 Outlook to Saskatoon
We will put in at Outlook and paddle back to Saskatoon. The plan is to leave Friday
afternoon and get on the water for a hour or so and camp just downstream of Outlook.
Saturday will put us just upstream of the Berry Barn, leaving a relaxing paddle back
into the boathouse on Sunday. This trip is ideally suited for beginner and intermediate
paddlers who have never done an overnight trip before. The S. SK river is an ideal
river to get your feet wet in canoe tripping and a group setting offers a very safe
environment to learn canoe tripping.

Summer may be dwindling, but beautiful fall paddling has yet to begin. A club Sunday paddle
will take place (weather permitting) on Sunday, Sept. 11th. We will meet at the boathouse
at 9:00 am, and shuttle to our put-in point south of the city. We will make our way back to
the city stopping along the way for lunch and snacks. Arrival back in the city is anticipated
to be sometime in the late afternoon at which point we will wash boats up and shuttle to
return vehicles. This trip is suitable for novice paddlers.
What to bring:
Warm clothing for changing day time temperatures and weather, sunscreen, lunch, snacks, plenty of water, hat, rainwear.
Anyone wishing to use their own canoe or kayak is free to do so if they are
able to transport it themselves. Also a reminder, that all participants on this trip must be club members.
Anyone with a hitch on their vehicle that could possibly pull the canoe trailer, please let me know as soon as possible.

sept 16-18 prince albert national park hanging heart lakes
here is an opportunity to explore the beautiful hanging heart lakes, crean lake and lost lake
in waskisu national park, september 16 to 18th. the plan is to drive the hanging heart marina
on friday the 16th and launch, paddling to crean kitchen campground (approximately two hours
paddle) and camp there. we will leave for lost lake early the next morning (about 2-3 hour
paddle) before the lake gets too grumpy. after a night at the rustic and secluded lost lake,
we will paddle back to the marina on sunday.
the trip is for intermediate paddlers who have some experience in how to handle a canoe
in big lakes. the first leg of the trip is an easy, calm paddle. the second leg will cross
the southern part of crean lake, which can often be a rough lake. kayakers are welcome, as
i prefer to kayak myself. but please have solid experience in a touring kayak. previous paddling
in a recreation kayak (like those from canadian tire or london drugs) does not count as
kayaking experience for this trip, please.
there will be a pre-trip meeting several days before the trip where paddling partners and
equipment will be allocated. if you are interested, please contact
colin schwartz
for more information and to book a place. There will be limited space
so let me know as soon as you can make it for sure. I will send people who occupy the
trip spots, a follow-up e-mail about the pre-trip meeting.

Sept 16-18 Date changed to Sept 23-25 Prince Albert National Park Waskesieu to Kingsmere
If you are interested in canoeing in beautiful Prince Albert National Park
in the fall, now is your chance.
This club trip is being organized by Richard Jackson and is geared to the
new paddlers in the club or paddlers that want to try some back woods
camping and is open to all members. Some experienced paddlers will be along
to help, so don't feel like you can't participate because you have never
camped in the woods before.
We will leave Saskatoon Friday morning, returning Sunday, late afternoon.
We will be starting our voyage at the Narrows campground on Waskesiu Lake,
paddling into Kingsmere Lake via the Kingsmere River (about 13 Km) and camp
at the Southend campground Friday and Saturday night. Sunday we will break
camp and return to the Narrows for our trip home. On Saturday we will
travel the beautiful Bagwa Canoe Route which includes Clare, Lilly, Bagwa
and Kingsmere lakes (about 19 Km). The logistics of the trip will be
explained in more detail at a pre-trip meeting approximately one week before
we leave.
Be aware that there is a 1 Km portage in the Kingsmere River (we do this one
twice) as well as portages into Clare and Lilly lakes (these ones are
shorter). The only skills required to participate is the knowledge of the
basic paddle strokes.
If you are interested, or have questions, please drop me a note. If you are
willing to give this a try I will put you on the list and will be contacting
you prior to the pre-trip meeting. Remember, the number of participants is
limited as our trailer can only carry 6 canoes.
If interested contact Richard Jackson

Sept 30-Oct 2 South Sask River, Saskatoon to Hague
Want one last paddle trip for the season? This is the perfect trip to fit into one weekend.
The trip will leave from Saskatoon on Friday at 4pm and travel along the South Sask River
ending in Hague on Sunday evening.
The trip space is very limited and depending if we find a person to pull the trailer,
we may be taking boats on top of our vehicles. Paddlers should be able to handle
approximately several hours of paddling in a canoe (with breaks) regardless of October
weather and temperatures, and should have previous camping experience and be
comfortable "roughing it."
If you are interested send an email to Kara. Please note
if you are able to pull a trailer and are interested let us know right away as
that may increase the amount we can include in our group.
