Anniversary Festivities (BBQ)
12:00 PM - 4:00 PM, Victoria Park (along the river, entrance
at Avenue.
G & 16th Street S)
Our annual open house at the boathouse made more special
because of our 35th anniversary celebrations. This is a great time
to come out, see what's new & buy your membership. It's also a great
time for those interested in the club to come down and find out what we
are all about. Local vendors (Eb's Source For Adventure, etc.) will be
on hand to show off some of their new models. There will be a BBQ at
noon, door prizes, anniversary cake & more. Special
thanks to Outter Limits, Eb's Source for Adventure, Boomtown Outfitters,
Jonas Hildebrandt, Canoeski Discovery Company, and Wholesale Sports for
donating door prizes! Thanks also to Canoe

May 12th, 7:30 PM Book Launch: Northern
Saskatchewan Canoe Country
The Saskatoon Canoe Club is pleased to present the launch
of Robin & Arlene Karpan's beautiful new book of photographs
and stories, Northern Saskatchewan Canoe Country. Arlene and Robin
are longtime members of the Saskatoon Canoe club and past members of the
SCC executive.

The book launch will take place at the Frances
Morrison Library auditorium, downtown Saskatoon, beginning at 7:30
PM on Monday, May 12th 2008. Robin & Arlene will present
a slideshow and presentation about an hour long that will be touching
on all of the lakes and rivers mentioned in the book. Books will be available
for sale at the event. The evening will also include a short presentation
by SCC member, Grant Cheston, on the history of the Saskatoon Canoe Club
in celebration of our 35th Anniversary.
To quote from the press release regarding the book:
Northern Saskatchewans
legendary waterways have it all a compelling history, jaw-dropping
scenery, adrenaline-pumping whitewater, and tranquility to soothe
the soul.
Northern Saskatchewan Canoe Country,
a new book by writers and photographers Robin and Arlene Karpan, takes
you on a visual journey along the norths most spectacular rivers
and lakes. The hardcover coffee-table book features 230 stunning images
of the northern wilderness, complemented by stories on the rich history,
the tremendous diversity of landscapes, and the Karpans personal
experiences in canoeing and traveling the north.
Northern Saskatchewan ranks among
the worlds great canoeing destinations. Famous rivers such as
the Churchill, Clearwater, Cree, Fond du Lac, and Sturgeon-weir flow
through a vast forested land of 100,000 lakes. Paddling in Saskatchewan
is to follow in the wake of voyageurs with fur-laden birchbark canoes,
aboriginal artists who painted mystical images on riverside cliffs,
and a whos who of northern exploration: Alexander Mackenzie,
David Thompson, John Franklin, Samuel Hearne, the list goes on.
Paddle to the secluded log cabin
where Grey Owl was inspired to write his bestselling books and proclaim
his message of conservation to the world. Drift along lakeside cliffs
displaying the most extensive and best-preserved set of aboriginal
rock paintings in Canada. Stand atop Lake Athabascas giant sand
dunes, feel the power of the Grease Rivers magnificent waterfalls,
and watch the morning mist rise from Skull Canyon on the Clearwater
River. Saskatchewans waterways run the gamut from the wild and
remote Porcupine River, dubbed Dead Mans River by
the Dene, to quiet protected lakes with secret hideaway campsites
and dynamite fishing.
Saskatchewan is blessed with
large tracts of pristine wilderness, although many wild places are
endangered. Northern Saskatchewan Canoe Country showcases the beauty
of the north, but it is also meant to raise awareness of our many
special places and the need to protect them.
